The phlyctena develops acutely as the initial manifestation of pyoderma. (2) A nodule that forms on the conjunctiva or in the superficial layers of the cornea usually as an allergic reaction to tuberculosis. However, occasionally phlyctenular keratoconjunctivitis may not respond to treatment and may spread to the central cornea causing loss of visual acuity and even corneal perforation in rare occasions.
